UN Environment Adopts Brazil’s Lavoisier LCA Software

The global push for environmental transparency just received a significant technological boost from South America. UN Environment has officially integrated the Brazilian-developed Lavoisier LCA software into its Global LCA Data Access (GLAD) platform.

This strategic move aims to streamline how sustainability data is shared across borders, ensuring that environmental impact assessments are accurate, interoperable, and accessible to decision-makers worldwide.

Bridging the Gap in Sustainability Data

Named after the pioneering chemist Antoine Lavoisier—famous for the principle that “nothing is lost, everything is transformed”—this software does exactly that for environmental metrics. Developed by the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict), a research unit of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), in partnership with the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR), the tool solves a major headache in the scientific community: data incompatibility.

The Power of Interoperability

According to Tiago Braga, Director of Ibict, the primary function of the Lavoisier LCA software is to promote interoperability. It allows sustainability data produced in Brazil to be utilized in international contexts and vice versa.

“The system transforms data into different models to allow it to be reused, optimizing the investment already made in data collection and sustainability research,” explains Braga.

Enhancing Global Decision-Making

Braga emphasizes that this integration comes at a critical time. By creating a mechanism for interoperability between Brazil and the rest of the world, the software increases transparency and supports multilateral trade and cooperation. In an era of climate emergency, ensuring that sustainability data is actually used in decision-making processes is vital for innovation and nature preservation.

A Major Milestone for the GLAD Platform

The Global LCA Data Access (GLAD) platform is the world’s largest non-commercial directory of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) datasets. LCA is a standardized methodology used to measure the environmental impact of a product or service throughout its entire life cycle—from raw material extraction to final disposal.

By incorporating the Lavoisier framework, the platform now offers a robust solution for converting between major industry formats. According to Llorenç Milà i Canals, head of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Life Cycle Initiative, the system has been active on the platform since January 2025.

  • Customization: Users can personalize data conversions using advanced settings.
