Annex I of NR-34 – Program Content and Minimum Course Load for Training Program

1. Basic Course for Hot Work Observer

Minimum course load: 8 hours.
Program content:

a) Classes of fire;
b) Methods of extinguishing;
c) Types of firefighting equipment;
d) Alarm and communication systems;
e) Escape routes;
f) Personal and collective protective equipment;
g) Fire prevention and firefighting practices.

2. Basic Safety Course in Load Handling Operations

Minimum course load: 20 hours.
Program content:

a) Basic concepts;
b) General considerations (lashing, lifting accessories, steel cables, etc.);
c) Load capacity tables and lifting angles;
d) Operation (hazardous loads, small parts, pipes, profiles, plates, and shafts, etc.);
e) Signals and communication during load handling;
f) Safety in load handling;
g) Practical exercise;
h) Final evaluation.

3. Supplementary Course for Lifting Equipment Operators

Minimum course load: 20 hours.
Program content:

a) Occupational accidents and their prevention;
b) Collective and personal protective equipment;
c) Applicable regulatory devices (NR-6, NR-10, NR-11, and NR-17);
d) Lifting equipment (types of equipment, equipment and accessory inspections);
e) Special risk situations (load handling near energized power lines, adverse weather conditions, among others);
f) Workstation ergonomics;
g) Practical exercise;
h) Final evaluation.

4. Basic Safety Course for Hot Work

Minimum course load: 8 hours

4.1 General Module: applicable to all hot work specialties.

Minimum course load: 4 hours
Program content:

a) Study of NR-34, Item 34.5;
b) Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis
* Concepts of Hazards and Risks;
* Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis Techniques;
* PHA and PRA – Preliminary Hazard Analysis and Preliminary Risk Analysis.
c) Permit to work (PTW);
d) Lower and upper explosivity limits;
e) Control Measures at the Workplace
* Preliminary Inspection
* Control of combustible and flammable materials
* Physical Protection
* Surrounding Activities
* Signing and Isolation of the Workplace;
* Post-Inspection for ignition source control
f) Air Renewal at the Workplace (Ventilation/Exhaustion);
g) Gas Network (Valves and Couplings);
h) Ergonomics;
i) Occupational diseases;
j) SDS.

    4.2 Specific Module: applicable to different hot work modalities.

    Minimum course load: 4 hours for each modality
    Program content:

    4.2.1 Welding Activity – Risks and Prevention Methods:

    • Risks of Electric Welding;
    • Non-Ionizing Radiations;
    • Gases and Metallic Fumes;
    • Welding Machines;
    • Welding Cables;
    • Electrodes;
    • Welding Current Circuit;
    • Risks in Welding with Special Electrodes;
    • Risks in Welding with Special Processes (Submerged Arc, MIG, MAG, TIG)
    • Risks in Gouging Operation;
    • PPE and CPC.
    • Electrical Protection – Panels, Circuit Breakers, and Power Cables

    4.2.2 Torch Activity – Risks and Prevention Methods:

    • Risks in Gas Cutting and Welding;
    • Gas Cylinders;
    • Gas Supply Systems;
    • Characteristics of the Gases Used (Acetylene, Oxygen, LPG);
    • Gas Hoses;
    • Torches;
    • PPE and CPC.

    4.2.3 Activities with Rotating Portable Machines – Risks and Prevention Methods:

    • Cutting and Grinding Equipment;
    • Accessories: Guards, Cutting Disc, Grinding Disc, Brush, Grinder, Sandpaper, and Others;
    • Safety System;
    • Physical Protection against Sparks;
    • Electrical Protection – Panels, Circuit Breakers, and Power Cables;
    • PPE and CPC.

    4.2.4 Other hot work activities – Risks and Prevention Methods:

    • Content defined according to the activity, identified in the PRA.

    5. Basic Safety Course in Tightness Testing

    Minimum course load: 24 hours.

    5.1 Theoretical Module

    Minimum course load: 8 hours
    Program content:

    a) Study of NR-34, item 34.14;
    b) Basic principles, purpose, and scope of Tightness Testing;
    c) Physical quantities;
    d) Technical Standards and Tightness Testing Procedures;
    e) Testing System;
    f) Special characteristics of the systems to be tested;
    g) Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis
    * Concepts of Hazards and Risks;
    * Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis Techniques;
    * Preliminary Risk Analysis (PRA).
    h) Permit to work (PTW);
    i) Protective Systems (Collective and Personal);
    j) Determination of isolation.

      5.2 Practical Module

      Minimum course load: 16 hours.
