This annex sets out specific safety requirements for new, used or imported butcher and grocery machines, namely: band saw, meat slicer, meat tenderizer, meat grinder and cold cut slicer.
1 Band saw – for cutting meat in retail.
1.1 For purposes of this Annex saw blade is considered to be a machine used in butcher shops to cut meat, especially on the bone.
1.2 The movement of the band in the vicinity of pulleys shall be protected with fixed guards or interlocked moveable guards, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items of NR12, except for the point of operation required for cutting meat, where a sliding adjustable channel shall enclose the perimeter of serrated band in the cutting region by releasing only a minimum area for serrated band to operate.
1.3 Vertical articulated arm – pusher – shall be adopted, with reciprocating motion relative to the saw, which serve to guide and push the meat and prevents hands accessing to the points of operation.
1.3.1 The articulated arm shall be firmly fixed to the machine frame, not presenting lateral play that compromises the safety, and be rigid so as not to permit deformation or bending.
1.4 Fixed table shall have an adjustable guide parallel to the saw blade, which is used to limit the thickness of beef cuts.
1.5 Cutting tables of the machines manufactured from the effective date of NR12 shall have a sliding part for easily moving the meat.
1.5.1 Sliding table shall have travel limiting device so as to protect the hands touching the saw blade.
1.5.2 Sliding table shall have a guide that allows supporting meat on the table and cutting motion.
1.6 Sliding table and articulated arm – pusher – shall have knobs – handles – with shields to protect the hands.
1.7 A manual device shall be used to push the meat sideways against the adjustable guide and perpendicular to the band saw for cutting small parts or for completing the beef cut.
1.8 Band saws shall have at least one emergency stop button according to items 12.56 to 12.63 and their sub-items of NR12.
2 Meat slicer
2.1 For purposes of this Annex meat slicer is considered to be a machine with multiple blades used in butcher shop for slicing pieces of meat introduced through a mouth or through a belt feeder.
2.2 The movement of cutting blades and their mechanisms shall be enclosed by fixed guards or interlocked moveable guards, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items of NR12, with the exception of feeding mouth, which shall meet the provisions of sub-item 2.3 of this Annex.
2.3 Feeding mouth shall prevent the access of upper limbs by acting as an interlocked moveable guard endowed with at least one dual channel safety switch monitored by dual channel safety relay, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items and Table I, item A of Annex I of NR12.
2.4 The discharge opening shall prevent upper limbs reaching to the cutting blades, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items and Table I, item A of Annex I of NR12.
3 Meat tenderizer
3.1 For purposes of this Annex meat tenderizer is considered to be a machine with two or more parallel toothed cylinders that revolve in reverse direction where pre-cut beef parts are being passed.
3.2 The movement of toothed cylinders and their mechanisms shall be enclosed by fixed guards or interlocked moveable guards, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items of NR12, with the exception of feeding mouth, which shall meet the provisions of item 3.3 of this Annex.
3.3 Feeding mouth shall prevent the access of upper limbs by acting as an interlocked moveable guard endowed with at least one dual channel safety switch monitored by dual channel safety relay, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items and Table I, item A of Annex I of NR12.
3.4 The discharge opening shall prevent upper limbs reaching to the convergence zone of the toothed cylinders, according to Table I, item A in Annex I of NR12.
4 Meat grinder – Mincer
4.1 For purposes of this Annex meat grinder is considered to be a machine that uses worm gear to grind meat.
4.2 The movement of worm gear and its mechanism shall be enclosed by fixed guards or interlocked moveable guards, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items of NR12.
4.3 The feeding mouth shall be constructed jointly and severally to the tray, forming a single piece that shall serve as a guard due to its geometry, or have a protection to prevent upper limbs accessing to worm gear.
4.4 The tray shall act as an interlocked moveable guard endowed with at least one dual channel safety switch monitored by dual channel safety relay, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items and Table I, item A of Annex I of NR12.
4.5 The discharge opening shall prevent upper limbs reaching to the danger zone of worm gear, according to Table I, item A of Annex I of NR12.
5 Cold cut slicer
5.1 For purposes of this Annex cold cut slicer is considered to be a machine with disc shape blade used to slice cold cuts.
5.2 The movements of blade, having risk of cutting, and its mechanism, also during sharpening, except for the slicing area, shall be enclosed by fixed guards or interlocked moveable guards endowed with at least one dual channel safety switch monitored by dual channel safety relay, according to items 12.38 to 12.55 and their sub-items and Table I, item A of Annex I of NR12.
