The National Institute of Metrology, Quality, and Technology (Inmetro) has launched an innovative digital platform called “Inmetro na Palma da Mão” (Inmetro in the Palm of Your Hand). Developed in collaboration with the National Mint of Brazil, this platform aims to combat the counterfeiting of Inmetro seals and ensure the safety of regulated products.
The Platform’s Key Features
The “Inmetro na Palma da Mão” platform introduces a digital seal designed to be used initially on motorcycle helmets, fire extinguishers, and natural gas vehicle (NGV) cylinders. These products were chosen due to their direct impact on user safety. The digital seals incorporate advanced security features provided by the Casa da Moeda, including unique elements that make counterfeiting significantly more challenging.
Consumers can verify the authenticity of these seals using their smartphones. By scanning the seal with a phone’s camera, they can confirm if the product is genuine. If a counterfeit is suspected, consumers can immediately report it through the platform. This initiative empowers the public to act as Inmetro inspectors, promoting transparency and safety in the market.
Collaboration and Innovation
The platform’s development involved extensive consultations over seven months with manufacturers, associations, and retailers. This collaborative approach ensured that the platform addresses the real-world challenges faced in the market. According to Inmetro’s president, Márcio André Brito, this project represents a significant step towards embracing Industry 4.0 technologies, aligning with the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services’ directives.
Addressing Counterfeiting
The need for this platform is underscored by staggering statistics. In 2023 alone, out of 720 million Inmetro seals produced, approximately 437 million counterfeit seals were found in the market. This highlights the rampant issue of product counterfeiting, which the new digital seals aim to mitigate. For instance, from January 2023 to June 2024, the market saw the production of 35.8 million fire extinguishers, 736,500 requalified NGV cylinders, and 13.8 million motorcycle helmets.
Technological Advancements
The new seals come equipped with four levels of security, including features like polarization with filters, special security inks with optical variations, and forensic authentication technology. These measures are designed to make illegal reproduction nearly impossible, enhancing product traceability and reducing counterfeiting rates across the country.
In addition to the new seals, the platform includes a virtual assistant named “Medida.” Powered by artificial intelligence, Medida is accessible via WhatsApp, offering quick verification of seal authenticity and providing support for consumer inquiries and fraud reports.
Conclusion
Inmetro’s “Inmetro na Palma da Mão” platform is a step towards enhancing consumer safety and combating counterfeit products. By leveraging advanced digital technologies and fostering public participation, Inmetro aims to create a safer, more transparent market environment. This initiative not only safeguards consumers but also supports legitimate businesses by ensuring product integrity.
