Climate Adaptation Plan for Brazilian Industrial Sector

The Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC) in Brazil has established a consultative and temporary working group tasked with shaping the Sectoral Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Industrial Sector. This initiative specifically focuses on identifying vulnerable supply chains and implementing targeted actions to address climate change impacts within the industry.

The working group, as outlined in the official decree published in the Federal Official Gazette on March 5th, will play a crucial role in the participatory development of the adaptation plan. Over a span of six months, starting with its inauguration at an event hosted by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) on April 3rd, the group will concentrate on several key tasks.

One primary objective is to map out the risks associated with climate change and identify the production chains within the industrial sector that are most susceptible to these risks. By delving into this granular analysis, the working group aims to propose effective and targeted measures that can be integrated into public policy. These measures are designed to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, ensuring a more resilient and adaptive industrial landscape.

Crucially, the group will collaborate in setting adaptation goals, including both short-term targets for 2030 and longer-term benchmarks for 2035 and 2050. This forward-looking approach underscores the commitment to anticipating and addressing the evolving challenges posed by climate change in the industrial sector.

Representatives from all MDIC secretariats will join forces with 21 guest participants from the industrial sector and civil society. Together, they will channel their expertise towards crafting practical solutions for issues such as supply chain disruptions due to extreme weather events and the resilience of energy infrastructure in the face of climate-related challenges.

The outcomes generated by this working group will significantly contribute to the overarching Sectoral Climate Change Adaptation Plan. This plan, a part of Brazil’s broader commitment to sustainable development, aims to revise the previously unimplemented 2016 National Plan for Climate Change Adaptation. With a 12-year duration and regular four-year revisions, the plan aligns with Brazil’s dedication to fostering a climate-resilient industrial sector and a sustainable future.
