The NR17, originally established by the Ministry of Labor and Employment in 1978, regulates safety and occupational health aspects in the workplace. It aims to adapt working conditions to the psychophysiological characteristics of workers. The NR17 has undergone several revisions since its inception, including updates in 1990 and subsequent alterations.
In 2007, two annexes were added to the NR17: Annex I (Checkout Operators) and Annex II (Tele-Service/Telemarketing). These changes were approved during the 49th Ordinary Meeting of the Permanent Tripartite Parity Commission (CTPP).
The most recent modification occurred in 2018, adjusting subitem 17.5.3.3 related to illuminance based on the cancellation of technical standard ABNT NBR 5413. The NR17 now references the Occupational Hygiene Standard No. 11 (NHO11) for evaluating indoor workplace lighting levels.
As of January 3, 2022, the updated version of NR-17 is in effect, following the regulatory agenda set during the 97th Ordinary Meeting of the CTPP.
