Sustainability Measures in Ports, Waterways, and Aviation Sector

The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) has introduced a series of sustainability measures in ports, waterways, and the aviation sector to mark World Environment Day on June 5. These measures are part of MPor’s commitment to integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices into its operations, demonstrating a strong dedication to sustainable development.

Key Initiatives and Actions

1. ESG Policy Implementation

MPor has established a dedicated Directorate of Sustainability to develop and implement a comprehensive ESG policy. This policy will guide the ministry’s strategic planning from 2024 to 2027, ensuring that all initiatives align with sustainability and responsible governance principles.

2. Climate and Adaptation Plans

The ministry is actively involved in the creation of the Climate Plan and sectoral mitigation and adaptation plans. These plans aim to address climate change impacts and integrate adaptive sustainability measures in ports into future projects.

3. Sustainability Certifications and Awards

MPor is developing Sustainability Seals and ESG Awards to recognize and promote best practices in ports and airports. These awards will encourage innovation and the achievement of environmental and social performance goals.

4. Green Concessions and Projects

Future hydrographic concessions, such as those in Madeira and Lagoa Mirim, will include provisions for climate change scenarios and the use of sustainable fuels. The regulation of green vessels will set standards for classification and offer tariff benefits to operators using environmentally friendly ships.

5. BR do Mar Program

Established by Law No. 14,301/2022, the BR do Mar program aims to boost cabotage transport from 11% to 30% of Brazil’s logistics matrix, increasing the volume of container transport to 2 million TEUs. The law facilitates the chartering of foreign vessels and enhances the quality and competitiveness of cabotage services, supported by the expanded use of the Merchant Marine Fund (FMM) for maintenance and maritime training.

6. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

The adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is gaining traction, with mandatory usage deadlines approaching. Brazil, with its significant potential as a SAF producer, has integrated SAF production into the Future Fuel project, recently approved by Congress. This initiative aligns with the aviation sector’s goals to reduce emissions.

7. Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen, produced from clean energy sources with minimal carbon emissions, is emerging as a crucial energy solution. Brazil’s northeast region, with its abundant wind, solar, and water resources, positions the country as a leading potential producer of green hydrogen.

MPor’s comprehensive approach to sustainability measures in ports showcases its commitment to environmental stewardship and the promotion of innovative, green practices across the transportation sector. These initiatives not only aim to mitigate climate impacts but also enhance the overall efficiency and competitiveness of Brazil’s ports, waterways, and aviation industries.
