Selo Verde Brasil: Pilot Products Announced for Certification

The Selo Verde Brasil initiative has marked a pivotal step forward in promoting sustainable industrial practices across Brazil. In a strategic meeting on April 8, 2025, the program’s Managing Committee, supported by the Advisory Committee and led by the Secretariat of Green Economy, Decarbonization and Bioindustry (SEV/MDIC), officially selected the pilot products for its certification scheme.

The chosen sectors — food and transformation — reflect Brazil’s commitment to aligning its industrial output with international environmental standards. Specifically, the pilot products include roasted and ground coffee, laminated steel sheets, and seven chemical products, showcasing both carbon-conscious and high-impact industrial outputs.

According to the Director of New Economies at SEV/MDIC, the selection was based on three strategic goals:

  1. Enhancing access to new markets, especially those with non-tariff barriers;
  2. Supporting sustainable public procurement initiatives;
  3. Accelerating the decarbonization process in Brazil’s industrial landscape.

Pilot Products Breakdown

  • Food Sector: Roasted and ground coffee, selected for its low carbon footprint and international market relevance.
  • Transformation Sector: Laminated steel sheets, also noted for minimal carbon emissions during production.
  • Chemical Industry: Backed by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association (ABIQUIM), the pilot includes:
    • Oleochemical Route: Solvents (augeo), fatty acids/alcohols, and vegetable-based polyols.
    • Alcohol Chemistry Route: Green ethylene, green polyethylene, and isoamyl alcohol/acetate.

These chemical products reflect a significant advancement in bio-based and renewable inputs, central to global green economy strategies.

Timeline and Certification Process

The Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) will develop the certification criteria. The process is expected to take 240 days, with the goal of certifying these pilot products by November 2025.

Strategic Importance of the Program

Launched in June 2024, Selo Verde Brasil is a voluntary certification program designed to define national guidelines for sustainable products and services. It is part of Mission 5 of the Nova Indústria Brasil (NIB) and integrates with broader initiatives like the Ecological Transformation Plan and Brazil’s Sustainable Taxonomy.

Importantly, the Selo will comply with national and international standards, ensuring regulatory cooperation and mutual recognition across borders. This alignment aims to position Brazil as a global leader in sustainable industrial development and to facilitate access to eco-conscious global markets.

As the pilot projects advance, the outcomes will serve as blueprints for scaling the certification to other sectors, reinforcing Brazil’s transition to a low-carbon, bioeconomic, and resilient industrial future.
